The research topic that I have chosen is the issue of low standardized test scores in Atlanta Public Schools, and this is affecting the graduation rate of these schools. In the city of Atlanta for at least the last 5-6 years the graduation rate has decreased. In my observation, I feel it is due to the many Standardized tests required to graduate from Certain Counties in Atlanta Public School districts.  I do not believe that this is an issue that can be solved at the governmental level, but instead through the school system itself. As a graduate from Gwinnett County Public School district in North Atlanta, I’ve seen many people not graduate due to the fact of a certain Graduation Requirement to graduate from this school district. I have an older brother who graduated from the very same school district and did not have to take this Writing Gateway. This is a new standard the county implemented a couple years ago. It is required you take two different writing test taken your sophomore year in High School. Most people know Atlanta is a very popular place for families to move and students who were brought up through the Gwinnett County system don’t find out until their senior year they will not graduate with a diploma due to the fact of this test. I believe it would be best to change these two writing tests and implement a general singular Senior Graduation test, that should be taken only as a senior. So solely students will know and be fully prepared for this test. I believe this would help close the gap and bring the graduation rates back up. I plan to learn more about the issues and causes of this standardized test through my research and create an idea using research on how we can come up with a better solution on a graduation test to solve some of those problems.
