Project description
Answer two questions below. Each answer should be approximately 1000-1200 words. ORGANIZE your answers. Grades will be based upon how well you address the question at hand, clarity of your argument, thickness of musical description, and use of supporting evidence. The best answers will pull on all the course material to support a pointed, compelling and original argument. Make sure your answers do not significantly overlap.
1. Music is a sound. It is a series of traditions and histories. It is a business. It is also a tool used by listeners and fans to discover, to negotiate and to express their identities—who they are as individuals and as collectives. Write an essay about the multiple, and sometimes contradictory, ways in which listeners have used music to forge and express their own sense of identity as revealed in at least three of the assigned readings.
3. The music industry has gone through several cycles of corporate consolidation and diversification since the late 19th century. Often these swings occurred in response to technological innovations or legal proceedings. Describe two such moments of change. Compare and contrast the effects they had on the sound of popular music.
