Hofstede uses the terms “synthetic” and “extreme” because those far edges of the continuum are not necessarily applicable to any culture. They are synthetic and extreme because the dimension describes the absolute definition of the dimension.

However, because cultures are really some degree of these dimensions, it would be more accurate, when actually doing your research and ethnographical report to refer to your target cultures as “strongly collectivistic” or “moderately individualistic” or “fairly high power distance,” or terms to those effect.
