History and Political Science Art History Project description ESSAY PROMPT The earliest surviving images tell many stories. Some of the most interesting stories seem to be about the relationships different human cultures have had with animals, over time. Choose any single prehistoric or ancient artifact that was presented during Weeks Two or Three (in the Stokstad and Cothren book, the lecture, or any other required or suggested text) and make a quali?ed argument for the kind of human-animal relationship that you see evidenced in/by the artifact. Be sure to use the specialized vocabulary that you’ve been learning in the textbook when developing your answer and describing how this relationship is evidenced in/by the artifact (i.e. don’t forget to call a stele a stele, or hieratic scale ” hieratic scale, etc.). While your essay might require some conjecture on your behalf, be sure to qualify/substantiate your claims ” using things learned in the textbook, lecture, or whatever quali?ed sources you deem as necessary. ((That said, please note that Wikipedia will NOT count as a an appropriate/quali?ed source. Even if you start there, you can’t end your inquiries with Wikipedia.)) Be sure to properly cite whatever sources you borrow information or arguments from and include a bibliography on a separate page after your essay. Hints to Remember: * Look at the artifact you choose and be sure to try and see ˜it,’ not what’s ˜behind your own eyes.’ * Ask yourself: What stories do the represented animals help us tell? What attributes of animals are most often represented? vs. Humans? What kinds of hybrid human-animal subjects do some cultures develop? What sorts of objects do animals appear on? (Get more abstract and ask: How are animal remains used in the production of these images or artifacts?) Etc¦
