Assignment: Write a critical analysis essay where you analyze and evaluate the 2015 film It Follows.

Analysis is defined as the careful study of something to learn about its parts, what they do, and how

they are related to each other; an explanation of the nature and meaning of something; separation of a

whole into its component parts (Merriam Webster).

Evaluation is defined as judging the value or condition of (someone or something) in a careful and

thoughtful way; to determine the significance, worth, or condition of usually by careful appraisal and

study (Merriam Webster).

While you are encouraged to pursue the road youre most interested in, you are required to address the

way the film was composed and its desired effect (i.e. its rhetoric) to a substantial degree.. Your essay

should address one or more of the techniques (certainly not all) or sub-techniques used to create the film:

mise-en-scene, framing, continuous and discontinuous movement, diegetic and non-diegetic sound. To

clarify, a sub-technique might be the lighting or costuming of the film (both fall under mise-en-scene).

This analysis should move beyond simple description and address the meaning or significance behind

these technique choices.

You are welcome to compare It Follows to the 1978 version of Halloween as long as you meet all other

criteria.
