Abstract:

Background information: Omega-3 fatty acids are claimed to have an effect on the person’s health in many ways. Many research found out that intake of omega 3 can improve cognition and decrease symptoms of mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. Along with other factors, it has been proven that omega 3 benefits the health of heart and brain. In this study, we want to observe the effect of omega-3 intake and it’s relation to better cognition and improved brain function.

Design and methods: A cross-sectional study among Zayed University’s female students aged 18-24. Participants will receive a survey and we will be comparing the correlation between their GPA with their intake of omega 3.

Objective: To examine the effect of omega-3 fatty acids on the cognition and psychology of young Emirati girls, university students aged 18-24 , and examine how it affects their memory as well.

Hypothesis: Intake of omega-3 fatty acids is positively correlated with better cognition and higher GPA.
Null Hypothesis: Intake of omega-3 fatty acids is not correlated to better cognition and higher GPA.

Conclusion: Based on the results of the study we will be able to determine whether the intake of omega-3 fatty acid positively affects the cognition of the brain in young Emirati girls and if people are aware of the importance of omega-3 fatty acids in the daily diet.

Keywords: Omega-3 fatty acids, Cognition, GPA.
Introduction:

Omega 3 is an essential fatty acid that has many benefits to the body. Many people do not acknowledge the importance of omega 3, while others do and take supplementations of omega 3. The human body cannot make omega 3, it is a type of polyunsaturated fats. There are 3 subtypes of omega 3, each has an important role in the human’s body. The marine omega 3 comes from fish, those are the EPA and DHA. The other type is ALA, which is mostly, find in vegetables oils and nuts. Omega 3 has many beneficial effects, the most proven effects are the ones related to heart diseases. There are not many researches done about omega 3 in the UAE, and the correlation between omega 3 and preventing heart diseases among elderly people in the United Arab Emirates. Even though many people in the UAE have fish mostly everyday, most of them do not know that this is benefiting them. I think there has to be more research done about omega 3 intakes and how it is benefiting people in the UAE. What I am willing to research about is the effect of omega 3 on cognition and brain function. There are many gaps in research about omega 3 in my region-the UAE- while on the other hands there are many other researches done in the western region that shows the link between omega 3 and cognition.

Literature review:

People haven’t been paying much attention to what they have been eating in the past. Only few really cared about their diets and knew that eating healthy food would prevent many disease and lead to many health benefits to their body. Many researches nowadays show the importance of food in preventing and curing the different diseases that are evolving with time. If only a person eats what is right for him and in the right amounts, he or she would not face many problems, except if it were from genetics. Not only food affect physiology of the body, it affects the psychological side and physical side of a person. Acknowledgment of this importance is now being introduced in many aspects and people are paying more attention to this aspect. Diet plays a big role in the life of any person. Whether a person is ill, he has to follow a specific diet so he can get better, or whether a person is fine, he still has to follow a diet that is healthy to remain disease free. A major aspect that we can control in our life is our diet, which can reflect our health being. Most people fear the word “fat: and whenever the hear this, they avoid anything that has high amount of it. There are different types of fats. The two main categories of fats are saturated and unsaturated fats. Saturated fat is the type that we should pay more attention to the amount we are eating. Saturated fat is the animal fat that is solid at room temperature. In most guidelines, SFs, or saturated fats are limited to 7% or lower of total fat intake, and that is because they may contribute to heart disease. Unsaturated fats is the second type, it has two subcategories the polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Those types have are somehow the less harmful types of fats. Olive oil is an unsaturated fat; it has many benefits that are now widely known by most people. Another type of unsaturated fats that has many do not know much about is Omega 3. Omega 3 is a polyunsaturated fatty acid that has many benefits to the human’s body. Omega 3 has a huge role in lowering the risk of many diseases. It has been shown that omega 3 lowers the levels of VLDL and LDL. (Tur, 2012) As Martin, 2012 mentiones in her book about the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, she states that: “ The value and benefit of fish oil and omega-3 fatty acids is being recognized more and more with each passing year. These essential fatty acids are being touted as extremely beneficial in all kinds of medical diseases, especially cardiovascular disease. “ In this book martin discusses how important omega-3 fatty acids is and how it helped her with her case, where she had a disorder in the uterine and omega 3 helped her greatly in reducing the inflammation. With starting to take flaxseeds, which are a good source of omega 3, with her meals, Martin discovered that the symptopms of the IBS that she has been diagnosed with dropped, and therefore she started looking for more information regarding omega-3 benefits. In her book: (The health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids in inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome, 2012), Maria also mentions that omega 3 has a function in decreasing symptoms of specific diseases without the use of medications. Moreover it has also been shown that omega 3 supplementation plays a role in changing the receptors of depression and lowers the symptoms of those differing from depression. (Duffey et. Al, 2015) One of the many more benefits of omega 3 is that it affects the cognition activity. Omega 3 supplementation has an advantage in improving cognition and memory in young people. (Isabelle et. Al, 2015) There has been many studies done about omega 3 and the how it affects the brain, heart and how it also helps in reducing the symptoms of many disease. Most of the studies done were examined on the western region, there hasn’t been a research done in the United Arab Emirates or the Khaleeji region about the effect of omega-3 fatty acids on cognition and how it affects the brain.

Objective:
? To examine the effect of omega-3 fatty acids on the cognition and psychology of young Emirati girls, university students aged 18-24 , and examine how it affects their memory as well.

Hypothesis:

? Omega 3- fatty acid helps in improving the cognition and memory of young Emirati girls and improves their memory span.

Research question;

? Does Omega-3 fatty acid helps in improving the cognition and brain function?

Research objectives:
? Compare the cognition of those who take omega-3 fatty acids with those who don’t.
? Compare the memory span of those who take omega-3 fatty acids with those who don’t
? Examine how omega-3 affects the mood and anxiety and stress levels.

Independent variable: Omega-3 intake
Dependent variable: Better cognition
Control variables: doesn’t take omega-3. Test their cognition.
Intervening variables: Coffee intake, better sleep, and exercises.
