1. Describe the news article by summarizing the main points of the story. Most importantly,
highlight why it is newsworthy
2. Learn about the real science behind the headline by going into the peer-reviewed literature.
Based on your review of the scientific literature
a. Summarize the ecological concepts or theoryrelated to the news story item (feel free to
use your textbook/lecture notesas a starting point)
b. Summarize and report on 2 scientific studiesthat have contributedto our understanding
of the ecological problem or issue highlighted in the news article
3. Offer insights on the quality of the news article (i.e. Was it misleading? Down-right wrong? An
excellent piece of journalism?). Be sure to compare and contrast claims made in the article with
what has actually been found/stated inthe scientific literature
