CASE FOR CRITICAL ANALYSIS
“Odd Couples”
A 29-year-old and a 68-year-old. How much could they possibly have in common? And what could they learn from each other? At Randstad USA’s Manhattan office, such employee pairings are common. One such pair of colleagues sits inches apart facing each other. “They hear every call the other makes. They read every e-mail the other sends or receives. Sometimes they finish each other’s sentences.” Randstad Holding NV, a Dutch company, has been using this pairing idea since its founding more than 40 years ago. The founder’s motto was “Nobody should be alone.” The original intent was to boost productivity by having sales agents share one job and trade off job responsibilities. Today, these partners in the home office have an arrangement where one is in the office one week while the other one is out making sales calls, then the next week, they switch. The company brought its partner arrangement to the United States in the late 1990s.
But when it began recruiting new employees, the vast majority of whom were in their twenties, it realized the challenges and the potential of pairing different generations together. “Knowing that these Generation Y (= covers people born between the 1980’s and the year 2000 ) need lots of attention in the workplace, Randstad executives figured that if they shared a job with someone whose own success depended on theirs, they were certain to get all the nurturing they required.”
Randstad doesn’t simply pair up people and hope it works. There’s more to it than that! The company looks for people who will work well with others by conducting extensive interviews and requiring job applicants to shadow a sales agent for half a day. “One question Randstad asks is: What’s your most memorable moment while being on a team? If they respond: When I scored the winning touchdown, that’s a deal killer. Everything about our organization is based on the team and group.” When a new hire is paired with an experienced agent, both individuals have some adjusting. One of the most interesting elements of Randstad’s program is that neither person is “the boss.” And both are expected to teach the other.

Question text

Which character do you propose to base your case study upon?

Note that when I say “approach” I mean weekly topic – we cover

11 main approaches across the 12 weeks of semester (week 1 was a general introduction), even though each week might include more than one
theorist.

You should apply 3 approaches (weeks) at around 400 words each. Here name the 3 approaches you propose along with a brief list
ofthe aspects of each approach that you will focus upon.

Character or case study is Bob Hawk a former prime minister of Australia; you can

google him as there is lengthy wikipedia of his life.

1. Psychodynamic approaches to understand an individual in order to make sense of

their relationship with others and how they view their world as well as their functioning which is based on interaction their conscious and
unconscious.

2. Using Skinner’s and Bandura’s behabiour theory that suggest that people model or imitate other’s behaviour to increase

certain behaviour that may be more attractive or beneficial to them.

3. I will relate Carl Roger’s and MasIow’s humanistic theory that

suggests that each human has unique qualities through personal growth and freedom.

Perhaps you could also compare other theories such as

-May’s existential psychology

-Eysenck and the big 5 – Trait approach

The aim ofthis case study is to apply enough biography

elements ofthe character to help make argument using three theoretical approaches.

i.e. what would be a suitable theory that would apply to

the character.

To make reference of any quotes that you use

To be able to summarize the approaches to the case study.

No referencing is

required but if you want to provide a link i.e. Bob Hawk that would be all right.

Please let me know the three approaches that you will use.
