Vanna Venturi House by Robert Venturi, Explain the value of non sequitur and duality in architecture

Write a 1000-word essay using case examples of either Piazza dItalia by Charles Moore or Vanna Venturi House by Robert Venturi, Explain the value of non sequitur and duality in architecture. Support using at least two conceptual drawings.

In the reading, complexity and contradiction, you saw how Venturi is describing the duality in architecture by using the ‘inclusive’ concept. He gives examples where contrasting elements are used to create a whole. The reading also explains how Venturi likes and includes non-sequitur elements in the buildings that may not necessarily be a logical arrangement.

Taking an example of Vanna Venturi House, you can see the traditional elements  like gable roof, lunette windows, long chimneys etc. applied in a very non conventional way. The main entrance in the centre is creating a sense of symmetry in the first look, but is not there due to placement of windows, you can also see a square opening in the centre of the facade that is creating a doorway, but the door stands to one side. The house looks very simple and traditional in the first look, but on a closer examination you can see how interestingly Venturi has worked on the details, scale, non sequitur arrangement and duality of elements to make it more complex.
