Topics (Choose only one):

1. Compare the image of the vampire in Le Fanu’s Carmilla and the TV episode of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”. How does the 20th century image of the vampire differ from that of the nineteenth century? What elements of the vampire tale remain constant, what changes? What does this tell us about the vampire figure over the centuries?

2. What is the importance of setting in Le Fanu’s Carmilla and the TV episode of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”. How do the images of the settings (Styria in Carmilla and Sunnydale in “Buffy”) contribute to our understanding of the story?

3. Compare and contrast the image of Laura in Le Fanu’s Carmilla and Buffy in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” How are these two figures alike? How are they different? Does the Victorian idea of “separate spheres” discussed by Dr. Kathryn Hughes impact both images of womanhood?
