Social Work Practice Theories
In this case, the populations that will be chosen are a group of youths who are addicted to drugs. For the process of guiding the youths to be a success, the theory that will be used during the study is the system theory. According to this theory, the behavior of an individual is described as an intersection of the influences that emerges from the parallel systems such as the families, the organizations and the society (Walsh,2014). Thus, the interaction of these systems poses a significant impact on the behavior of an individual in the society. The theory applies to this case because it will be useful in explaining the reason the young people have indulged in the drugs and the factors behind this practice.
Social Work Practice Theory Paper
This paper provides you with an opportunity to review the practice theory and research literature on two theoretical approaches (for example: structural family theory, cognitive theory, behavior theory) with a specific problem/population. Consider doing this paper on the same problem/population as your case presentation (due Week 7) so that you can explore clinical work with that client population more thoroughly. Imagine you are a clinical social worker with that client, pick two theories to research, and describe how/why they apply to and are useful in conceptualizing the client population.
This paper should be 3-5 pages in length (double-spaced, 12 pt. font) and include a cover page and list of references with complete APA formatted citations for the literature you have reviewed. The 3-5 page length does NOT include your cover page or references page. The text of the paper should be organized in a narrative form with the following section headings:
1. Introduction: What you will cover and why you selected this area.
2. Problem population: Briefly describe the problem population you will be addressing,
3. Review and critique of 2 theories: Using readings/articles. Use the following guidelines for analysis of each intervention:
a. Identify the theoretical framework and any underlying assumptions. What do we know about the theory? What are the major concepts of the theory? How does the theory guide our interventions?
b. Discuss the empirical basis, or lack of empirical basis, for the theory. Has research been done to determine the effectiveness of the theory with different populations? If so, what does the research say about the effectiveness of the theory with different populations?
c. Discuss the application of the theory to the client’s situation, including strengths and limitations. Has the theory been applied to your chosen population? If so, what does the research literature state about the theory’s application to your chosen population? What are the strengths and limitations of using this theory with your specific population?
d. Discuss the role of the therapist in the theory, including use of self issues. What would a therapist utilizing this theory with a client do? What would their role be?
e. Discuss how practice effectiveness can be evaluated with this theory. What does the research literature say about the effectiveness of the theory in practice, i.e. its application? As a therapist, how would you be able to see that use of the theory is working with your client?
4. Conclusions: About the theory AND its application to your population. The expectation is that you will summarize what you have learned from the professional literature on your topic as well as critically assess the theory and research you have reviewed.
5. References: At least 7 scholarly references, excluding the course texts, should be used, properly cited in APA format, and included in the references page at the end of the paper.
